The volume of spam calls on mobile phones in South Korea has reached a record high in the first eight months of the year, news reports said Wednesday.
South Korea’s state broadcaster said data from the Korea Internet and Security Agency, presented to the National Assembly on Wednesday, showed that 280 million spam calls and messages were recorded or detected between January and August, up 68 percent from the same period last year.
The number represents about 95% of the nuisance calls recorded during the entire past year.
It is noteworthy that annoying calls on mobile phones are increasing annually.
Telecom providers who fail to take action after learning of spam calls and messages on their networks face fines of up to 30 million won, or $22,600, and have been criticized for not doing enough.
