The ring models made of gold-plated brass, called dummies, look exactly like their counterparts made of precious metals and serve as visual aids for jewelers.
The best day of your life, says Hollywood. But also the most expensive, says your bank account. And the most photogenic, says Instagram. On their wedding day, couples swear their everlasting love to each other, according to the most romantic of all stories. For the Catholic Church, marriage is worth a sacrament, for the state it is worth a new tax bracket. Two people are starting a new phase of life, ritually sealed. And they are willing to spend a lot on it. According to a recent survey by the digital wedding planner Weddyplace, most couples spend between 10,000 and 20,000 euros on their big day. One item is at the top of the budget list: the rings. They are supposed to symbolize the promise of fidelity that the happy couple makes to each other during the marriage. Even the ancient Romans wore rings after their marriage, and today a tattoo is sometimes enough. There are no limits to the price of the jewelry, true to the motto: more expensive is always better.
Towards the end of 2022, according to the Federal Statistical Office, 34.6 million Germans were married or living in a registered civil partnership. Assuming that at least half of these couples opted for wedding rings, there are 34.6 million of them on married fingers across the country, assuming both have chosen them. In the best case scenario, the ring will last “until death do them part”. But at least until the end of the marriage, whether before the divorce judge or the undertaker. The manufacturers therefore have to produce a particularly durable product, it should also be as individual as possible and reasonably affordable. Behind the ring set, which makes its grand entrance during the vows, there are hours of craftsmanship, sometimes machine-assisted, sometimes quite traditionally with a file and hammer.
