A Russian fighter jet is said to have disappeared during a battle on the Black Sea. Ukraine says it was shot down, Russia remains silent.
Kiev/Moscow – In order to protect the strategically important oil and gas platforms in the north of the Black Sea, located between the Crimea and the Ukrainian mainland, Russia and Ukraine are engaged in repeated skirmishes. The platforms serve both sides in Ukraine War not only as economically important bases, but above all as important spy and reconnaissance posts.
On September 11, a naval and air battle between Russia and Ukraine reportedly took place in the northern Black Sea. During this battle, a Russian Su-30 fighter jet disappeared from radar without a trace.
According to reports from the Telegram channel Crimean Windciting Russian media sources, the plane had fired missiles towards Ukraine before it disappeared. Newsweek reported that it was a routine military operation. In response to the jet’s disappearance, the Russian Black Sea Fleet launched a full-scale search and rescue operation.
Russian fighter jet shot down by Ukrainian air defense
The Ukrainian military intelligence service also reported on Wednesday that a Russian Su-30 fighter jet was shot down by a portable anti-aircraft weapon during a special night operation in the Black Sea. The Ukrainian authorities did not disclose any details of the operation.
“The invaders lost contact with their fighter aircraft at around 5 a.m. on September 11, 2024. About three hours later, the Russians launched a search and rescue operation involving an An-26 aircraft and Mi-8 and Ka-27 helicopters,” Ukraine’s Defense Intelligence Service said.
No Russian report on crashed fighter jet: Military blog confirms loss
The Russian reports did not initially mention the loss of a fighter jet. They reported a failed attack by Ukraine on a Russian drilling platform in the Black Sea. According to them, Ukrainian motorboats tried to attack the platform. Eight of the 14 boats were shot down and sunk. The remaining boats aborted the attack. There was no confirmation of these details.
Only the Russian military blog Rybar, which is close to the Ministry of Defense, later confirmed the loss of a Su-30 that was shot down while repelling the Ukrainian attack. This aircraft had taken off from the Russian military airfield Saki on the Crimean peninsula.
Ukraine War: Significant Successes Against Russian Air Force
The Ukrainian armed forces have already achieved significant success against the Russian air force this year. In June, the Ukrainian military published a map showing where over 30 Russian aircraft were damaged or destroyed in 2024. “The Armed Forces of Ukraine continue to effectively destroy Russian combat aircraft, including using Western weapons,” said the accompanying Telegram post from the Center for Strategic Communications of the Ukrainian Armed Forces (StratCom).
