Plot

In the late 1980s, Nina, a thirteen-year-old girl, lives in a troubled family: her father and mother are always arguing and Lorenzo, her younger brother, is frequently struck by sudden fits of anger. The family moves out of necessity from the center of Rome to a dormitory neighborhood on the outskirts, characterized by a sad and desolate panorama made up of the gray concrete of the typical high-rise buildings of public housing and by large expanses of squalid and abandoned fields.

Nina finds herself in an environment that is completely alien to her: she has lost contact with her old friends and the new school, run by nuns, has nothing to do with the one she attended in the center of the capital. This jumble of negative and demoralizing aspects is suddenly diluted by the girl’s encounter with Sirley, a thirteen-year-old South American girl with a character as strong as it is difficult and complex. Sirley is in fact a nonconformist who is not afraid of anyone and who despises the rules of common life. Little by little, between the two girls, united by lives that are certainly not peaceful, a deep feeling is born that goes beyond friendship to become a sort of “sisterhood”.
