In a recent interview with Edge magazine (via GamesRadar), Axel Torveniuscreative director of Indiana Jones and the Ancient Circletalked about how the next title dedicated to the famous archaeologist does not “encourage firefights”, with the aim of trying to use your wits and intelligence.
We don’t encourage gunfights. It’s not suggested as the main way to go, it’s more about always trying to use your wits and your whip. Indy doesn’t have any superpowers. You can see very often that it’s not easy for him to fight. He’s ultimately a teacher and a slightly clumsy archaeologist. He seems to have this passion for constantly putting himself in these weird situations with enemies and traps.
Torvenius went on to talk about how having an Indiana Jones game focused on shooting wouldn’t be true to the character’s core.
It wouldn’t be true to the character if he was constantly shooting at the camps for all the enemies. We tried to capture the feeling that if you have to engage in combat, it’s very dangerous to shoot. And it’s also dangerous against the enemies, because they will have an alarm system and will send reinforcements.
The director Jerk Gustafsson added that while the Ancient Circle will feature plenty of firearms, players will be encouraged to adopt a variety of different optionsas they will be both noisy and dangerous.
We have a game where there are a lot of guns, but you choose not to use them because it’s too loud and it’s too dangerous. You can take a gun and change it to use it as a melee weapon.
Indiana Jones and the Ancient Circle will be available on Xbox Series X|S and PC from December 9, 2024. The game was later announced for PlayStation 5, which was instead scheduled for release in Spring 2025. Here you can find our preview of the game from Gamescom.
