Nixon is pardoned. Washington. President Gerald Ford granted an unconditional pardon to Richard Nixon for crimes he had or might have committed while in office in order to “put this to rest” in the Watergate scandal. He spoke for more than three minutes before mentioning Nixon for the first time, explaining that he had thought long and hard about what he was going to do, “and I think this ends here,” he said. “Now, therefore, I, Gerald Ford, President of the United States, in accordance with the pardon powers vested in me by the Constitution, have granted a free and complete pardon to Richard Nixon for all offenses against the United States which he, Richard Nixon, may have committed or may have committed or which he took part in committing during the period from March 20, 1969, to August 9, 1974.” Ford left his desk and walked out of the room. Nixon accepted the pardon for all transgressions committed during his time in office. Nixon said: “I have been informed that President Ford has granted me a pardon. In accepting such a pardon, I trust that such an act of compassion will help to relieve our country of the burden of Watergate. I acknowledge that I erred in not acting more decisively and directly in dealing with Watergate, especially when the matter escalated from a scandal to a national tragedy.”
