Reader’s opinion|We don’t have to look very far, and we can see what would happen if we lacked civilization.
Eino Heikkilä raised in his opinion piece (HS 29.8.) highlighted the plight of the cultural sector in our country’s financial crisis. The realities of the economy drive cultural actors into a predicament. At the same time, we celebrate the theme year of Civilization named by the Ministry of Education and Culture.
During the year, the goal is to invite everyone to think about and realize the meaning of civilization – and also what would be left behind if we didn’t have civilization. We don’t have to look very far, and we can see what would happen if we lacked civilization.
Finland has grown into a cultured country, realizing that economy and culture are connected. We have developed in a few generations from one of the world’s poorest countries to one of the most successful countries. Civilization has also been seen to produce economic good for our country.
Investing in education has paid off. The core of our civilization is in a competent people, our culture, a better tomorrow made by non-governmental organizations and foundations together, and an atmosphere that invites everyone to participate. Civilization is attached to know-how, science, art and culture, i.e. everything that we are. Civilization needs its defenders at this time, because we know how we will fare if uncivilization takes over thinking.
