“I feel like I let a lot of people down.” Taylor Fritz is down after losing in three sets to Jannik Sinner in the US Open final. The American played his first career Grand Slam final. “It was a key moment, obviously I wanted to win. I felt good, I wasn’t particularly nervous. I would have liked to have played better from the beginning,” says the 26-year-old. “I didn’t serve well in the first set, then my serve improved a lot. There were some shots that I could and should have played better. Maybe nothing would have changed, but right now I’m very disappointed, I can’t see all the positive things I did in the tournament. I have to process the disappointment and then maybe I’ll look at it differently,” he says.
Fritz beat Sinner in his career in 2021 at Indian Wells. “He’s improved a little bit since then, right?”, says the American. “Compared to then, he’s definitely improved his serve and he moves in a completely different way. Last year he beat me at Indian Wells and you could see that he had reached a level close to where he is now. In the final part of last season he changed gear, started winning and gained confidence. The change compared to 2021 is remarkable,” he says.
