An exhibition is coming to an end in New York that not only shows the impressive work of indigenous artist Melissa Cody, but also reminds us of the limits of understanding through political symbols. Cody’s weavings at MoMA PS1 in Queens combine traditional Diné (Navajo) symbolism with the visual heritage of millennials, such as graphics from video games. Like other indigenous artists, Cody also uses the sun wheel. In their culture, which is more than a thousand years old, it is a symbol of good luck. Other religions such as Hinduism also use it, but when it was appropriated by the National Socialists, it became the swastika.
