Lula signaled that he wants a black woman to head the Ministry of Human Rights; PT is applying for the position and Macaé Evaristo is Gleisi’s favorite
The PT will suggest names to the president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva to take over as Minister of Human Rights and Citizenship after the dismissal of Silvio Almeida due to accusations of sexual harassment on Friday (6.Sep.2024).
Lula indicated that he wants a black woman for the ministry as a symbolic response capable of stopping the crisis that is ravaging the Planalto due to the accusations against the former minister. Poder360 found that, with the profile chosen by the president, 3 names gained strength: sociologist Vilma Reis; the national secretary of Access to Justice, Sheila de Carvalho; and the state deputy of Minas Gerais Macae Evaristo (PT).
Other names were also mentioned in the hours following Almeida’s dismissal, such as lawyer Carol Proner, advisor to the Presidency’s Public Ethics Commission, and Martvs Chagasformer secretary in the Lula government.
Proner, who is Chico Buarque’s wife, told people close to him that I had no intention to take over, while the sociologist lost strength after Lula signaled his preference for a woman.
PT members said that Macaé Evaristo is the party president’s favorite, Gleisi Hoffmann (PR). The state deputy’s visit to the Esplanada dos Ministérios is a desire of the party’s wing in Minas Gerais, which feels sidelined in the government. One of Macaé’s guarantors is Gleide Andrade from Minas Gerais, treasurer of the PT.
THE Poder360 found out that, even with Macaé’s favoritism, the PT of Minas will present two more suggestions to Lula: Edilene Lobo and Nilma Lino.
Lobo was the first black minister of the TSE (Superior Electoral Court), while Lino was Minister of Women, Racial Equality and Human Rights during the 2nd government of Dilma Rousseff (PT), from 2015 to 2016.
Sheila de Carvalho’s name is well-regarded by members of the Planalto. In December 2022, the lawyer and activist of the anti-racist movement was appointed special advisor to the then Minister of Justice Flávio Dino. On February 1 of this year, she became Secretary of Access to Justice in the Lewandowski administration.
Vilma Reis is also a defender of the black movement, as well as women. She held the position of ombudsman general of the Public Defender’s Office of the State of Bahia for 2 terms, from 2015 to 2019.
