Algerian authorities on Sunday declared President Abdulmadjid Tebboune the big winner of Saturday’s election, even though a rival candidate complained of irregularities in the count and less than half of registered voters cast ballots.
Official preliminary results gave Tebboune 95% of the vote, enough to avoid a runoff, while Abdelaali Hassani Cherif got 3% and Youcef Aouchiche 2%. Turnout was 48%.
Tebboune, backed by the military, faced only nominal opposition from Hassani Cherif, a moderate Islamist, and Aouchiche, a moderate secularist, both with the blessing of the powerful Algerian establishment.
Hassani Cherif’s campaign claimed that polling station officials had been pressured to inflate results and reported failures to deliver voter registration records to candidates’ representatives, as well as instances of group proxy voting.
“This is a farce,” said Hassani Cherif’s spokesman, Ahmed Sadok, adding that the candidate had obtained many more votes than had been announced, citing the campaign’s own tallies in the regions.
