The podium in a difficult race
Third position for Enea Bastianini in his home GP on the circuit of Misano Adriaticoon a difficult Sunday for the rider from Rimini. In addition to his less than perfect physical condition, the #23 Ducati rider also had to consider the possibility of returning to the pits to replace his bike after the drops of rain falls in the first half of the race.
The thought of changing the bike
An option that Bastianini actually evaluated, before continuing. A choice that, unlike Jorge Martin’s, rewarded the future KTM rider, who climbed up to the podium zone: “The race was very particular and strange, I didn’t expect it to be like this, but it was also fun – he commented on Sky Sport MotoGP – I left without being very convinced because this morning I had a bit of a headache stomach problems. After a few laps it started to rain, I saw Franco (Morbidelli) who had fallen down and I said: ‘Now let’s see how we end up’. The temptation to return to the pits like Jorge did was therebut in the end I preferred to stay on track and I pushed”.
The advantage with the rain
A rain that didn’t last long in Misano, however, and that provided a concrete opportunity for Bastianini to recover positions: “For me it was better with the rain because I got a little closer – he admitted – I didn’t say ‘do or die’, but almost. In those situations you never know what the grip is, and especially on the kerbs it was really low, so they were dangerous. However I managed to close that little gap I had at the end I thought I could even play for the victorybut I was too close to the limit. The rear also started to vibrate and in the end I gave up a little bit”.
The first signs
When was the moment when the Ducati rider realized the first drops of rain and the danger of the latter? “I noticed the rain in turn 1 – he concluded – it was raining quite a bit and it wasn’t a little, and in fact Franco went down. From then on it started raining all the way around. It stopped at the big bend, it started there and then it stopped elsewhere, so you never knew what situation you were going to find and it was the most dangerous situation. For Misano 2 I expect the conditions to be different. It will be colder and we will have to reassess them. It will be an unknown and we hope to make the rear medium work too”.
