The San Marino GP Chronicle
A brief rainfall in the first half of the race actually proved to be decisive for the final classification of the San Marino Grand Prixespecially to the detriment of the world leader Jorge Martin. After a thrilling battle with Bagnaia in the first laps, during which ‘Pecco’ maintained the lead right in front of the Spaniard, the evolution of the race came on the 7th lap. Following the fall of Acosta, who was fighting with Morbidelli for 3rd place (not without contact between the two), the Roman rider also subsequently lost control of his bike just when the rain on Misano Adriatico. Most of the riders, despite the difficulty, decided to continue on the track without replacing the motorcycle with wet tires. All, or almost all, except Martin. Once he returned to the pits, the Spaniard was in for a surprise: the water stopped falling. A gamble that didn’t pay off for the Spaniard, who returned to the pit lane shortly after to change bikes again, thus dropping back to the back of the group. At the moment of greatest complexity between the first drops of water and the interruption of the precipitation, Marc Márquez took advantage of the confusion on the track to take the lead ahead of Bagnaia and Miller, then overtaken by the second official Ducati of Enea Bastianiniwho finished 3rd. With this result, Marquez takes his second consecutive victory after the one obtained in Aragon, while Bagnaia takes advantage of Martin’s harakiri to recover ground in the world standings on the Spaniard, now 7 points ahead of ‘Pecco’.
Marc Marquez (1st, Ducati-Gresini): “For me the most important thing was the speed after the rain. That rain definitely gave me the opportunity to go to the front of the race, and when I found myself in the lead I said to myself: ‘Now I will try to find the same pace I had in practice’. As for the rest, the emotions were very strong. When I crossed the finish line I was very happy, but today maybe someone from heaven, maybe Fausto Gresini, said: ‘Let’s let a few drops fall’. This helped me to win this race, so this victory is for the Gresini family”.
Francesco Bagnaia (2nd, Ducati): “It definitely went better than yesterday, when there was a chance to win and I didn’t take it. Today it was impossible to do more than 2nd. Marc was too fit for me to try to win. Maybe next time I’ll be in top physical condition and have a chance, but Marc in these conditions is definitely very strong. We’ll try again next time, but without the rain the advantage I was gaining was different, and being able to recover 20 points is definitely very positive.”
Enea Bastianini (3rd, Ducati): “AND It was a very difficult GP for me because I started from behind, but when I saw the possibility of closing the gap to the leading group, and when there was a bit of rain, I tried to get closer to the podium. I also fought for the victory, but I was very tired also because I have pain in my foot and this morning I didn’t feel very well. I’m happy, a podium at home is always special and thanks to everything to my team, the sponsors, the family and everyone”.
