Espoo New student apartments are coming to Otaniemi teekarikylä.
On Wednesday, September 4, Espoo’s city planning board discussed the plan change for Servinnieme, which, if implemented, would enable the construction of three new houses for student apartments in teekkarikylä. The urban planning committee decided to propose the approval of the plan change to the city government.
Senaatti kinteistöt has applied for the zoning of the Servinniemi area.
About 130–140 new student apartments would be added to the three buildings, says the real estate development manager of Senaatti kiinteistöt Emmi Sihvonen by e-mail.
“Construction of new houses could start in the spring of 2026, if the plan is approved this fall. The progress of the project can be affected by a planning complaint. The progress can also be affected if, for example, there are substantial changes to the investment subsidies of the special groups of the Housing Finance and Development Center ARA,” says Sihvonen.
Provided the scheme is approved, Helsinki’s student housing foundation, Hoas, buys the plot of land on which student apartments are planned from Senaatti kinteisteis, and carries out the construction of the houses. If the construction work started in the spring of 2026, the houses would be ready Hoas’ property manager Kim Lindholm according to the estimate, around the turn of 2026–2027.
The first phase of Teekkarikylä was completed in 1952. According to the website of the city of Espoo, Teekkarikylä currently has around 2,500 inhabitants.
Teekkarikylän the size is not likely to increase after that, if the plan now pending to build three new houses is realized.
“Teekkarikylä is now starting to get locked down. There are no new places for construction in Teekkarikylä. In general, Otaniemi is at the center of Hoas’ construction strategy,” says Lindholm.
Hoas recently started construction of a new site in Otaniemi, which is located at the intersection of Kalevalantie and Kehä ykkönen. 213 apartments will be completed at the site.
“Hoasi and the student union of Aalto University are coming up with a student housing project on Otaniemi Miestentien. When Neste’s cooling station moves out of Miesentie, two houses will be built for student apartments in its place,” says Lindholm.
