The governor of São Paulo, Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans), expressed his condolences on social media over the death of Military Police Sub-Lieutenant Paulino Cristovam da Silva, 52, shortly before the September 7th parade in São Paulo. The police officer fell from his horse. “My deepest condolences for the death of Sub-Lieutenant Paulino Cristovam da Silva, 52, of the Military Police Cavalry Regiment, who suffered a tragic accident on horseback on his way to the Civic-Military Parade for the Proclamation of Independence, in Anhembi,” said Tarcísio. “May God comfort his family and friends at this time.”
In a statement, the PM said that the police officer, who worked in the Mounted Police Regiment (Cavalry), fell from his horse. “The cause of death is being investigated by the Military Police, which is providing full support to the family of the police officer, who had been in the force for 32 years,” it said.
Regarding the Independence ceremony, held at Anhembi, which was attended by the mayor of the capital of São Paulo and candidate for reelection, Ricardo Nunes (MDB), the governor wrote on social media that it was a day to “celebrate” the 202nd anniversary of the proclamation of Brazil’s independence.
“To remember and exalt those who did so much for the autonomy of our territory, who gave us the pride of wearing the green and yellow on our chests and taught us to honor and respect our flag, our anthem and the symbols of our country,” said Tarcísio. “May Brazil grow ever greater and may every Brazilian have the full right to their freedom.”
According to the ceremony’s organizers, more than 6,700 people would participate in the parade.
