The incident began shortly before 6 p.m. (10:00 GMT) about nine miles outside London, when police were alerted to shots fired at multiple vehicles on Interstate 75 in Laurel County, according to multiple media reports.
The report said the gunfire was coming from a tree-covered area or an overpass.
“Please avoid Interstate 75 around Exit 49. Until further notice! Use an alternate route and do not be anywhere in that area,” Mayor Randall Weddle said on Facebook.
Police officials said the suspect remains at large.
“The suspect has not been arrested yet and we are urging people to stay inside,” police said on Facebook.
“Kentucky, we are aware of a shooting on Interstate 75 in Laurel County. Please avoid the area. We will provide more details as they become available,” Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear wrote on Twitter.
