Attack this evening of about 50 masked Israeli settlers in the Palestinian village of Jit, in the northern West Bank, where at least four homes were torched and six vehicles were set alight. One Palestinian was shot dead and another was seriously injured.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) says troops have arrested an Israeli civilian who participated in the “serious” attack carried out by settlers. The suspect has been handed over to police. The Israeli military also said it is investigating the death of a Palestinian, and has launched a joint investigation with the police and the Shin Bet, The Times of Israel reports.
According to the IDF, after dozens of settlers began attacking the village, troops and Border Police officers were dispatched to the site of the attack. The troops used riot control equipment as they drove the Israelis out of the village.
“The IDF condemns such events, as well as the rioters, which undermine security, law and order, and divert the IDF and security forces from their primary mission of countering terrorism and protecting the safety of residents,” the Israeli military said.
The Israeli President Isaac Herzog in a statement “strongly” condemned the attack. “This is an extreme minority that is damaging to the law-abiding community and the settlement movement as a whole, as well as damaging Israel’s global reputation at a particularly sensitive and difficult time,” Herzog lamented.
“This is not our way and it is certainly not the way of Torah and Judaism. Law enforcement must act immediately against this dangerous phenomenon and bring the offenders to justice,” Herzog concluded.
