“Leave my family alone,” says Regina Carnovale Nunes; the deputy shares the document on social media
Regina Carnovale Nunes, wife of the mayor of São Paulo and candidate for reelection, Ricardo Nunes (MDB), defended her husband after the federal deputy and also candidate Tabata Amaral (PSB) mention a police report filed by Regina against the MDB member in 2011 for domestic violence.
The report was filed at the 6th Women’s Defense Precinct in February of that year. However, according to the Civil Police, the victim did not pursue the complaint, which prevented the investigation of any crime. Read the full note below.
During the debate of the Bandheld on Thursday (8.Aug.2024), while Amaral questioned Nunes, Regina, who was in the audience, shouted: “Leave my family alone”. The moment can be heard in the event broadcast on YouTube. Below is a transcript of the dialogue:
Tabata Amaral: “I hope you don’t get nervous or lose control. As the only female candidate here, I need to ask you a question. Your wife accused you of assault and filed a police report at the women’s police station. Every woman knows that this is a difficult decision. In a debate on UOL, you were asked about this and said that the police report had been forged. The next day, the Civil Police denied this, stating that the police report was true. […] So, I ask: did you lie or not on Uol?”
Ricardo Nunes: “Look, Tabata, I have never lifted a finger against my wife, who is even here. We have been together for 27 years. […] I didn’t expect this level of behavior from you. What always happens during election time is that these issues come up. Unfortunately, they invent these stories. In fact, 14 years ago, my wife and I went through a difficult period, lasting about 4 or 5 months, when we separated. We had a disagreement, but no aggression. I never lifted a finger, and she has already said so.”
The mayor of São Paulo asked for respect “in the name of the wife and women” and said again that “never lifted a finger” against Regina. “I love her so much. She is the reason for my life, along with my family.”he stated.
In a debate held by UOL and by S. Paulo Newspaper In July, the current mayor and candidate for reelection said that his wife denied having made the registration.
“Regina already said that she didn’t do it. She hired a lawyer, I even separated the material to give you. The lawyer filed the petition saying that he wanted this police report signed. The police station responded that there is no such police report. [assinado]“he declared.
According to criminal procedure, some crimes require representation to be investigated. That is, the victim must authorize the eventual reported crime to be investigated within 6 months after the occurrence was registered.
Without representation, the facts do not lose validity, but they also cannot be investigated. For the process to continue, the victim would have to make a new report.
On X (formerly Twitter), Amaral published the police report filed by Nunes’ wife in 2011.
Understand the case
Information about the existence of the police report was published by the newspaper S. Paulo Newspaper in 2020, during the campaign of Bruno Covas (PSDB) for Mayor of São Paulo – Nunes was the vice on the ticket. According to the record, Regina had reported cases of domestic violence, threats and insults in 2011, when the couple allegedly separated “excessive jealousy” of the current mayor.
Today, the two are together and have a daughter. Regina denied any assault to the newspaper. When the report was published, she sent a hand-signed note stating that she had said: “things that are not real” in the police report.
Here is the full statement from the São Paulo Civil Police:
“The Civil Police emphasizes that police reports filed, whether online or at physical police stations, are subject to several procedures to ensure their legitimacy. The case in question was filed by the 6th Women’s Defense Precinct in February 2011. At the time, the victim appeared at the specialized unit to report the facts and the report was forwarded to the Embu Guaçu Police Precinct, which is responsible for the area where the incident occurred. However, there was a need to file a complaint against the perpetrator, which the victim did not do.”
