Mexico City.- President Andrés Manuel López Obrador warned yesterday that behind the protests and blockades in the states of Puebla and Oaxaca, there are lawyers and union leaders who seek to make profits or take political advantage of the conflicts.
Speaking about the blockade that began last Tuesday on the Mexico-Puebla highway, he said that the farmers participating in the sit-in have been deceived and manipulated.
However, he said his government would not give in to blackmail.
“It is a protest movement on the Puebla highway, they are making a claim that a right of way from decades ago was not paid. But there is a lawyer behind it who is trying to take advantage of these very opportunistic lawyers. I say this here so that it is known, because my heart is not a warehouse and we are not going to cover up for anyone,” he said.
“I also want to tell the farmers that they are harming many people by blocking the road. And that they should not let themselves be manipulated or deceived by this lawyer who is going to take – he thinks – personal advantage. He may be thinking that since my government is coming to an end, now is the time. Well, no, because we do not allow ourselves to be blackmailed by anyone.”
Without giving names, the president said that the lawyer will not be able to charge a single cent as a result of the agreements that the Government could reach with the dissatisfied ejidatarios.
