Noora Komulainen and Ursula Wikström The opening day in women’s Olympic golf went with a strong minor win.
Komulainen used 84 strokes (+12) and Wikström 82 strokes (+10) in his round. On the leaderboard, the Finns are in the jumbo places, when some of the players are not on Opening Day. There are 60 players in the competition.
“There’s no help but to fight,” Komulainen summed up after his round.
The women’s competition will be played on the same Le Golf National course where the men’s Olympic rankings were decided. However, the field has been shortened for women.
The rough stages have also been slightly shortened for the women’s race, but still they are still very difficult according to Komulainen and Wikström.
“The openings were always a meter or 20 centimeters on the raff side, and for the most part nothing could be done about it. This field is merciless,” Komulainen said.
Komulainen said that he doesn’t even remember when he last played on such a difficult court.
“Not many have played under par today, so that says something. Men get out of gangs in a completely different way than women.”
Wikström in addition to the par results, the round included one birdie, five bogeys and three double bogeys.
Komulainen didn’t collect any birdies on his scorecard, but there were eight bogeys and two double bogeys.
Wikström also spoke about the difficulty of the rough patches on the Olympic field. The starting points for the next three days are difficult.
“Actually, there’s no going up from there anymore,” Wikström shook.
Despite their disappointing rounds, Komulainen and Wikström praised the atmosphere of the opening day.
“That’s really cool. We don’t get in front of such audiences every week,” Komulainen said.
