The provincial deputy for Finance in Gipuzkoa, Jokin Perona, died on Tuesday night after being run over by a car while he was cycling in Peleas de Abajo (Zamora). The 46-year-old politician from the Basque Nationalist Party (PNV) was riding with his 10-year-old son when he was run over. The emergency services dispatched to the scene were unable to do anything to revive him.
The driver of the vehicle involved in the accident has tested negative in the alcohol and drug tests carried out by the Civil Guard and is being investigated for reckless homicide. Perona had been working in the Treasury area of the Gipuzkoa Provincial Council since 2015 and was a provincial deputy for Treasury and Finance since 2020. His son, who was present at the accident, did not suffer any injuries.
The 112 operations room in Castilla y León received the call for the incident at 9.17pm on Tuesday when they were asked to provide assistance for an unconscious cyclist after being run over by a car. A mobile ICU and primary care health personnel from the Corrales del Vino health centre, the town with the closest emergency services, attended. The dispatched team confirmed the serious injuries of the victim and were only able to certify his death shortly after arriving. The Basque Nationalist politician was in the province of Zamora on holiday with his wife and three children.
Eider Mendoza, deputy general of Gipuzkoa and party colleague, has lamented the death of her colleague on the social network X, formerly Twitter, whom she has described as “a friend and colleague, honest and affectionate”.
Basque parliamentarian María Eugenia Arrizabalaga, also from the PNV, used X to say goodbye to the deceased: “Jokin Perona Lerchundi lost his life today. I have just received unfortunate news. Provincial Deputy for Finance of Gipuzkoa. Basque-speaking. Father. Honest worker. A terrible loss for everyone. Not to mention his family.” Perona trained in Business Administration and Management at the University of Deusto (Bilbao) and entered the public sector in 2015 as Provincial Director of Finance until 2020, when he became Provincial Deputy for Finance and Finance. The Government Subdelegate in Zamora, Ángel Blanco, has expressed his condolences and reported that the Civil Guard will take charge of the investigation of the event, which will be handled by the First Instance Courts of Zamora.
Also on Wednesday, another cyclist lost his life in an accident on the road between the Valencian towns of Llutxent and Benicolet, Europa Press reports. The cases are added to that of another recent fatal accident involving a cyclist on the roads of Zamora a few weeks ago, when a 77-year-old man was killed by a car in Villaferrueña. Last Sunday, August 4, another cyclist died after being run over in Fuerteventura and another bicycle user was injured. According to records from the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT), from January 1 to August 6, 27 cyclists have lost their lives on interurban roads – on average, one death every eight days – compared to 24 in the same period in 2023.
