An Australian athlete competing in the 2024 Paris Olympics has been arrested for buying cocaine from a dealer in the French capital. The man is Tom Craig, a 28-year-old field hockey player.
The athlete was arrested yesterday evening, Tuesday 6 August, after buying a gram of cocaine in a street in the ninth arrondissement of Paris. He was accompanied by arrested also the pusher, who had with him three bags of cocaine and 75 ecstasy pills.
Craig’s arrest was confirmed by the Australian Olympic Committee. According to the reconstruction, the athlete purchased the drugs about a quarter of an hour after attending a team dinner.
The midfielder, a member of the Dutch club Klein Zwitserland, is engaged to a colleague: the Australian field hockey champion Alice Arnott.
Three years ago, at the Tokyo Games, Craig had won silver with his national team. In Paris, however, the Australian field hockey team was already eliminated in both the men’s and women’s categories.
The news of the arrest comes a day after the Canadian Olympic Committee decided to withdraw the accreditation of track and field coach Rana Reider, coach of Italian Olympic champion Marcell Jacobs, among others, after three women reported him for sexual assault.
