The Return of Miami
The 2023/2024 season that recently ended with Pascal Wehrlein’s victory was also the last to include the Portland E-Prix in the calendar, which will be dropped after two years. From the next world championship, however, the United States will remain in the top electric single-seater series with the return of theMiami E-Prixwhich has been missing since 2015. This is the certain future for Formula E in North America, but already for the 2026 The US could include two races in a single championship for season 12.
A single race in the USA: why it is not convincing
A feasible project, even as admitted by the Formula E CEO Jeff Doddsin an interview given to racingnews365.comin which he states that he is not convinced that he wants to host a single event in the USA in a single location: “If I have to be honest, I’m not sure – He admitted – the advantage of a consistent venue, like Tempelhof in Berlin, is that people get used to the venue. They know it’s going to be there, the schedule is consistent, and the crowds show up year after year. However, there are two things I would say: sometimes you get a bit tired with a venue, and you may not be able to attract new fans to come and see the event because of travel requirements.”
The candidate cities for Season 12
Consequently, the possibility of including a second event in the USA is absolutely possible for Dodds himself, who indicated that there are 20 candidate cities to host an E-Prix: “If you look at the United States, probably 20 cities could host Formula E – he added – there’s New York, Los Angeles, Miami, Atlanta, Detroit, Phoenix, Dallas, and so on. There are so many great cities with a motorsports heritage that could support a race. My view has always been that the United States needs more than one race. We need it at least two, maybe even more. The good news is that there are a lot of American cities interested in organizing a race, but I think it’s difficult to choose and say that we will be there forever, because there are all the cities interested with their markets and their different fan bases. To fly from one part of America to the other takes hours, it’s like flying halfway through Europe, right? It takes a long time. So it’s unlikely that a fan from New York will come to Los Angeles. So I think we need more than one race and I am open to changing the location“.
Two races in 2026
If 2025 will therefore see only Miami on the calendar representing the United States, 2026 could actually host two races. Negotiations to make this project a reality, however complex, have already begun: “Calendar conversations are really complex. – he concluded – as you can imagine, it’s like playing chess, it’s really complex, but we have enough ongoing conversations with the US headquarters to make you think we might have two locations in the United States for the Season 12“.
