After more than a decade on the market, Google has announced that it is ending production of its popular Chromecast devices. The news, made public Tuesday, marks the end of an era that began in 2013, when the first Chromecast revolutionized the way we streamed content. While Chromecast devices will remain available “while supplies last,” Google said it will continue to provide software and security updates for newer models, without specifying which ones. The last update to the line was the Chromecast with Google TV, released in 2022.
Google justified the decision to discontinue production by citing the significant technological evolution that has taken place since the launch of the first Chromecast. “We’ve invested heavily in bringing Google Cast technology to millions of TV devices, including those running Android TV,” Google wrote in a statement. “We’re taking the next step in the evolution of TV streaming devices, adding even more capabilities to your smart TV, built on the same Chromecast technology.”
Replacing the Chromecast, Google has unveiled the new Google TV Streamer, which will be available on September 24 for $99.99. This set-top box represents a significant upgrade over the Chromecast with Google TV, thanks to a 22% faster processor and integration with Thread and Matter technologies, which promise better connectivity and interoperability with other smart devices.
