Despite the ban on former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL), who recorded a video demanding the dissolution of alliances with left-wing parties, the PT and PL will be together in São Luís (MA). The two parties are part of the coalition of federal deputy Duarte Júnior (PSB), whose candidacy was registered this Thursday, the 1st, at the Superior Electoral Court (TSE). The PL leadership claims that formal support is not yet confirmed, but the registration of the coalition supporting the PSB candidate already includes Bolsonaro’s party.
The former president recorded a video alongside federal deputy Zucco (PL-RS) condemning the alliances formed by the PL and left-wing parties. According to Bolsonaro, these coalitions go against the principles of the political group and must “cease to exist.”
“My agreement, everything I agreed on back then with the party president, Valdemar (Costa Neto, national leader of the PL), is being fulfilled. Now, what happens? We are going to have more than 2,000 candidates for mayor throughout Brazil and also hundreds of candidates for city council. In some municipalities, the PL is now appearing, as if they were incubating, forming coalitions with parties such as the PT, PCdoB and PSOL,” said the former president.
Duarte Júnior will have as his running mate Isabelle Passinho from the Workers’ Party. According to sources linked to the PL, there is a ban on supporting candidates whose candidates for mayor or vice mayor are from Lula’s party.
In addition to the PT and PL, Duarte’s candidacy is supported by seven other parties: PSDB, Cidadania, Avante, PRD, Podemos, PP and União Brasil. In the registration sent to the TSE, the deputy declared having R$641,602.45 in assets.
Duarte is an ally of Supreme Federal Court (STF) minister Flávio Dino, who governed Maranhão between 2015 and 2022. When he was Minister of Justice in the Lula government, between January 2023 and January of this year, Dino was involved in clashes with pro-Bolsonaro parliamentarians.
To the Statethe president of the PL of Maranhão, former state deputy Hélio Soares, stated that support for Duarte has not yet been confirmed. According to him, a meeting with Valdemar Costa Neto is scheduled for next Thursday, the 15th, in Brasília, to discuss the coalition with the PT members.
“We are evaluating. We will first talk to Valdemar properly to see the circumstances. We do not want, in any way, to disrupt the right-wing process, especially in our state,” said the president of the Maranhão PL.
Alliance is the result of a partnership created by the governor
According to interlocutors from the PL and PT in Maranhão, the union of parties for Duarte’s candidacy is the result of a political articulation created by Governor Carlos Brandão (PSB). Before the 2022 elections, where he was reelected, Brandão united acronyms of different ideologies and formalized a political pragmatism in the state that goes beyond the ideological disputes fought in Brasília.
The PL’s approach to Duarte’s candidacy also occurs due to the lack of dialogue between the current mayor of São Luís, Eduardo Braide (PSD), and Bolsonaro’s party. The head of the Executive Branch of São Luís is supported by the MDB and the Republicans.
