In recent days, the rains caused the appearance of at least 24 sinkholes in the city, according to data provided by the Municipal Water and Sanitation Board (JMAS).
Of these sinkholes, nine have been addressed so far, while 15 are still pending repair.
The areas most at risk of subsidence include Francisco Villarreal Torres, Tomás Fernández, Miguel de Cervantes and Paseo Triunfo de la República.
These areas, which include some of the city’s main arteries, are more prone to problems due to the age and wear of their drainage systems.
These systems, which are more than 50 years old, have reached their limit capacity.
The main cause of these sinkholes is the deteriorated state of the collectors and the infiltration of water when the manhole covers are lifted. The problem of sinkholes in the city is related to the age of the collectors.
When manhole covers are lifted, water can seep into the ground, causing it to weaken. The accumulation of water and its infiltration into the ground contributes to the formation of sinkholes, affecting both road safety and the structure of the streets.
The JMAS pointed out that the sanitary drainage system, which is located in the center of the streets and has manholes or sewers, is its responsibility. However, the storm drainage system, located on the corners and edges of the streets, is the responsibility of the Municipality.
The decentralized agency said that the purpose of storm drainage is to manage rainwater, but if this system is clogged or not properly maintained, water accumulations occur that can contribute to subsidence.
JMAS stressed that proper management of storm drains is essential to prevent these problems. They must be free of obstructions and in good condition to prevent water from accumulating in the streets and causing damage.
Lack of maintenance of this type of drainage is one of the causes of the accumulation of water that then infiltrates the soil and contributes to subsidence.
JMAS said it carried out dredging and drainage maintenance tasks when necessary, and the ultimate responsibility for storm drain maintenance falls on the municipality.
