Back to the top after ailments
Amidst the ‘usual’ Ducatis, in the pre-qualifying of the British GP, on the Silverstone track, Aleix Espargarò stood out. The Spaniard from Aprilia achieved the second best time today, placing himself between the two main contenders for the title: Jorge Martin and Pecco Bagnaia. The Spaniard, who will hang up his helmet at the end of the year, is coming off the race not held in Assen and the forfeit of the Sachsenring. Now his physical condition is good, but the recovery has not been easy.
“The injury? I struggled – he admitted to Sky Sport MotoGP – 10 days after Germany I was still in a lot of pain. In recent years I have had many fractures, but this one still hurts after a month. It is not a big worry now, but it was one of the worst injuries I have had”. Physical ailments aside, the mood of the #41 is extremely positive and this inevitably reflects on his riding.
Clear mission: exploit every opportunity
“All the bikes are going strong and the average level of the grid is very high, so the rider who manages to be happy and calm and to take even the problems as a positive challenge is the one who makes the difference. I am in a moment in which I am very happy and calm – explained the ‘captain’ of the Noale manufacturer – I am happy with this team and I know that I am not far away [al ritiro]so I want to take advantage of all the opportunities.”
The icing on the cake is the special bond that Espargarò has built with the Silverstone track over the years, and not just for the 2023 victory: “I really like this one, it’s one of my favorites. The best race of my life for me is the first podium with Aprilia, achieved here three years ago. I’ve always been fast here, you can make lap times. There are a lot of third gear corners, where I’m really strong”. The opponents have been warned.
