An effective courtship
Next year Carlos Sainz will become only the third driver in the history of Formula 1 to have raced for all three of the Circus’ ‘historic’ teams: McLaren, Ferrari and – from 2025 – Williams. After a very long push and pull lasting half a season, the Spaniard, who was without a contract for next year, has in fact accepted the intense courtship made to him by the team principal of the Grove team, James Vowles.
The former head of strategy at Mercedes has never hidden the fact that the Madrid native was the first option on the list to replace the American Logan Sargeant but the interest shown in Sainz by Alpine and Audi – the latter with the entry of Mattia Binotto, who had already brought the #55 to Ferrari – had undermined Williams’ certainties. Instead Sainz decided to give confidence to the project set up by Dorilton Capital.
A victory for the future
In a recent interview with international media following the announcement of the new line-up for next season, Vowles explained how important the choice of Sainz was for him and how much this means for the Williams team looking ahead: “I think it’s a huge event for Williams to have two of the best drivers in the world. and I think it’s a sign of things to come”Vowles said.
“This It shows that we are willing to make the investments necessary to stay at the topalthough many of these investments are not immediately visible. What you can see concretely is what we are doing to have with us the best drivers who were available. Having beaten one of the biggest manufacturers in the world makes me incredibly proud. I also said this to Carlos. It was one of the best moments of my careerand I’ve had many. The fact that he chose us is a huge, monumental decision”, he concluded.
