After Newey, another heavy farewell
Rumours had already circulated after a few races in this 2024 World Championship about the farewell of Jonathan Wheatleyvoices forcefully silenced by Christian Horner. Wheatley was on the shortlist of candidates to take over from Horner in the event of the team principal’s forced departure and to date Horner is still firmly at the helm of Red Bull, but on board the crew is starting to lose high-ranking lieutenants as Jos Verstappen had prophesied. Wheatley, in fact, like Adrian Newey, has also announced his farewell to Red Bull after 18 years of service. The sporting director of the Milton Keynes team will remain in his position until the end of the season and then in July 2025 he will join Audi-Sauber after the protocol gardening leave period.
Reached by the head racingnews365.com Former driver Jan Lammers does not believe that this further loss could be so detrimental for Red Bull: “A good team can start to falter for the most disparate reasons.we also saw what happened at Ajax, but from my point of view Red Bull is managing what is happening well, we will never know if these departures are actually the consequence of something that happened internally or if simply after so many years the charm and the stimuli represented by new challenges have taken over”Lammers’ football comparison (Ajax had a shocking start in the last championship which saw them occupy the second-to-last position in the standings, only to then climb back up to the final fifth place, valid only for participation in the Conference League, the less prestigious European cup recently inaugurated by UEFA).
According to Lammers, the replacement or the team that will take over from Wheatley will be able to continue on the winning streak drawn by the future Audi team principal: “If you have achieved so many successes, obviously you have created a valuable work culture around you. Basically everything works thanks to the protocols created and you don’t have to do anything else but continue like this. Not only that, in every company the natural ‘succession’ is prepared and usually in each handover the person preparing it has gained experience of what could have been done better and this is explained or illustrated to the person who will take over”.
