The main mediators are working to intensify their contacts to prevent the escalation of the situation in the Middle East region in the coming period following the assassination of the head of the Hamas political bureau, Ismail Haniyeh.
The Egyptian and Qatari mediators conveyed messages to the United States on the necessity of pressuring Israel to prevent the expansion of the conflict in the region in the coming weeks, according to what a source confirmed to Al-Ittihad.
The source explained that Cairo and Doha are trying to maintain the truce talks after receiving indirect messages from Hamas, stating that it will not continue indirect negotiations with Israel, due to Tel Aviv’s assassinations of the movement’s leaders, especially the political bureau, noting that the mediators stressed the need to continue the negotiations by any means during the coming period.
US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken held a series of contacts with mediators in Egypt and Qatar over the past few hours, to emphasize the need to continue the negotiation process between Hamas and Israel, especially after the assassination of the head of the movement’s political bureau in the Iranian capital, Tehran.
Hamas has suspended its participation in the truce negotiations during the coming period, calling for the need for pressure from the United States of America to ensure the success of any negotiation process that leads to a comprehensive and complete ceasefire in Gaza, according to what a Palestinian source confirmed to Al-Ittihad.
The source explained that Hamas believes that the ongoing negotiations will not achieve anything new in light of Israel’s refusal to make any concessions that would lead to the success of the agreement, pointing to the movement’s desire and the rest of the factions to reach an agreement that ends the current state of war and pushes towards concluding a serious prisoner exchange deal with Israel as soon as possible.
The source revealed an upcoming meeting of the Shura Council of the group affiliated with the Hamas movement to discuss some issues, perhaps the most prominent of which are the truce talks, and the appointment of a successor to the head of the movement’s political bureau, suggesting that Khaled Meshaal, a leader in the movement, will assume the presidency of the political bureau temporarily until the elections are held.
