Joe Biden’s withdrawal from the 2024 US election is a political earthquake – reason enough for ARD to adjust its TV program. The focus is on Kamala Harris.
Berlin/Washington – After the surprise withdrawal of US President Joe Biden as the leading candidate, the US Democrats are hoping for a turnaround in the election campaign against Republican Donald Trump. The most promising replacement candidate before the vote in November is the current Vice President Kamala Harris, who is supported by Biden and numerous other party leaders. But the succession is still open. There are other alternatives in the race for the Democrats. A total of six candidates are said to have ambitions for the top post in the White House. For ARD, the confusing situation in the USA is reason enough to change its linear TV program.
Because of Biden and Harris: ARD broadcasts “Brennpunkt” at 8.15 p.m. instead of TV film
The ARD traditionally broadcasts a “Brennpunkt” (focus) on outstanding events that cannot be predicted in the long-term program planning. At 8:15 p.m., presenter Sabine Scholt will lead the program on “Das Erste”. Among other things, she will be holding discussions with the ARD correspondents in Washington and with Christoph Heusgen, the chairman of the Munich Security Conference.
The focus is on key questions: What are Harris’ chances of asserting herself within the party? What would her chances be in a duel with Donald Trump? And what does Biden’s withdrawal mean for transatlantic relations?
In addition to live subtitling, the “Brennpunkt” broadcasts are also offered with a translation into German Sign Language (DGS) – on the Internet as a live stream and via HbbTV. After the broadcast, it can be accessed in the ARD Mediathek. The following broadcasts are delayed by 15 minutes – such as the following evening film “Veer Ragout Rendezvous”.
Harris with first speech to the public after Biden’s withdrawal from US election 2024
Just before the broadcast of the ARD Brennpunkt, Kamala Harris addressed the public in a speech for the first time since Joe Biden’s withdrawal from the candidacy. In it, she honored the incumbent US president and praised his work over the past four years. However, Harris did not comment on her own candidacy – nor on possible running mate candidates. Officially, this is a celebration for the championship teams of the National Collegiate Athletic Association on the grounds of the White House.
By the way, did you already know? Kamala Harris privately: What we know about her husband, parents and wealth.
