Supreme Court made the federal deputy and the TCE-RJ advisor defendants for the murder of the councilor in 2018
The family of the murdered councilwoman Marielle Franco (Psol-RJ) celebrated the decision of the 1st Panel of the STF (Supreme Federal Court) this Tuesday (June 18, 2024) to make defendants the federal deputy Chiquinho Brazão (no party-RJ), the advisor of the TCE-RJ (Rio de Janeiro State Audit Court) Domingos Brazão and the Civil Police delegate Rivaldo Barbosa for the death of the psolista and the driver Anderson Gomes, in 2018.
The Minister of Racial Equality, Anielle Franco, sister of the councilor, he said on your profile on X (formerly Twitter) that this was a day “long awaited” for years for his family and Brazilian society. He also hoped that the trial would be quick, as they are already waiting “too much”.
Marielle’s widow, the Rio councilor Monica Benicio (Psol), stated celebrated the Supreme Court decision “with tears and relief.”
“Seeing them officially as defendants gives me hope, a feeling that I have never lost in all these 6 years of fighting. The hope of seeing this crime finally solved, returning democracy to our country”declared Marielle’s wife on the same social network.
THE DECISION
The 1st Panel of the STF, formed by 5 ministers, received the complaint presented for the PGR (Attorney General’s Office) which, in addition to the brothers Brazão and Barbosa, also includes Robson Calixto da Fonseca, Domingos’ former advisor, and militiaman Ronald Alves, known as Major Ronald. They deny involvement in the crime.
All ministers followed the vote of the case rapporteur, Alexandre de Moraes. Below are the other members that make up the 1st Class:

With the decision of the collegiate, the accused will face criminal action. In the new phase of the process, evidence will be collected, with testimony from defense and prosecution witnesses. In the end, the STF will judge again whether to convict or acquit the defendants.
REMEMBER THE CASE
Marielle and Anderson were killed on the night of March 14, 2018. She had left a meeting at the Casa das Pretas Institute, in the center of Rio de Janeiro. The car in which the councilor was traveling was chased by criminals until the Estácio neighborhood, which connects with the North Zone.
The case had national repercussions and became a symbol of the influence of the Rio militia on the State police. Even with investigations, the crime remained unsolved for more than 6 years.
The investigation was initiated by the Rio de Janeiro police, but, after 2023, it began to be monitored by the Federal Police. The director of the PF, Andrei Rodrigues, went so far as to say that the investigation of the case was “clumsy” by third parties.
Investigations of the bodies and a plea bargain indicated former military police officer Ronnie Lessa as the shooter. He allegedly fired 13 times towards the vehicle.
Lessa is arrested. He had already been condemned for smuggling firearms parts and accessories. The author of the plea bargain is also former PM Élcio Queiroz, who drove the Cobalt used in the crime.
Other Suspect of involvement who was arrested is former firefighter Maxwell Simões Correia, known as Suel. It would be his responsibility to deliver the Cobalt used by Lessa for dismantling. According to investigations, all are involved with militias.
At the end of February, the police arrested Edilson Barbosa dos Santos, known as Ear. He is the owner of the scrap yard suspected of dismantling and disposing of the vehicle used in the murder.
