Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal comeback to win 2-1 against the Czech Republic the debut match in Group F of Euro 2024. The Czechs took the lead in the 62nd minute through Lukáš Provod, only to suffer a comeback in the 69th minute with an own goal from Robin Hranác and in the 92nd minute thanks to a goal from Francisco Conceiçao, 18 years younger than Cr7.
The first half ended goalless even though the Portuguese team played well, in control of the game but dangerous on only two occasions, both with Cristiano Ronaldo as the protagonist. In the 32nd minute Cr7 arrives at Bruno Fernandes’ vertical pass but shoots at Stanek with a low exit. Vitinha tries to follow up from a distance but the Czech number 1 is still attentive. In the 46th minute Ronaldo was once again the protagonist with a shot in the penalty area which was again blocked by the Czech goalkeeper.
In the second half Martinez’s team was still dangerous with first Dalot and then Ronaldo who in the 58th minute with a free kick that went around the barrier but ended up in the arms of Stanek. In the 62nd minute the Czech Republic took the lead somewhat surprisingly with Provod who first beat Diogo Costa from the edge. The Portuguese rushed forward and luckily found the equalizer in the 69th minute: Vitinha’s cross deflected by Nuno Mendes with Stanek repelling it onto the leg of Hranac who fired it into his own goal to make it 1-1. Portugal believes in success in the 70th minute Bernardo Silva challenges Stanek again. In the 87th minute, Portugal scored but the cry of joy was choked down the throat by VAR, who disallowed Diogo Jota’s goal from a few steps away for offside after the post was hit by Cr7 who was in an irregular position. In the 92nd minute the goal came from the young Francisco Conceicao who had just entered. Pedro Neto breaks through on the left and crosses to the centre, Hranac intercepts but does not move away and favors Conceicao’s intervention which makes it 2-1.
