Minister of Finance says he will also talk to the president of the Senate about other topics
The Minister of Finance, Fernando Haddadsaid this Tuesday (June 18, 2024) that he will meet with the president of the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG), to debate the renegotiation of States’ debts with the Union.
“I’m going to meet with Pacheco next week, to discuss, among other things, this topic”he told journalists at the headquarters of his ministry, in Brasília.
The saga about the debt of the Federation units has gone back and forth. In the most recent move, the government proposed reducing interest and charges in exchange for investment in education.
Pacheco is one of the congressmen most involved in negotiations on state debts. He wants a quick answer on the topic. Minas Gerais, his homeland, is one of the states with the highest debts to the Union.
The president of the Senate stated on June 13 that he will present to the president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) a plan for the renegotiation of State debts.
“I believe that next week will be suitable for the definitive presentation of a project to begin a legislative process”the senator told journalists at the time.
According to him, the state debt renegotiation program will take place via a complementary bill. The proposal will include:
- reduction of the debt index – today IPCA (Broad National Consumer Price Index) + 4%, limited to Selic, the basic interest rate;
- federalization of share capital of state companies;
- granting credits.
