London has entered the top 10 of a global index that analyzes the most expensive cities. The city rose nine places from last year to eighth place in Mercer’s 2024 cost of living rankings. Positioned just below New York, London jumped to the top of the list thanks to factors such as the overall cost of life and rental prices, according to the authors of the ranking.
Hong Kong retained the top spot in this year’s ranking, followed by Singapore. The Swiss cities of Zurich, Geneva and Basel complete the top five most expensive cities. Edinburgh placed 53rd, Glasgow 68th, Birmingham 78th, Aberdeen 82nd and Belfast 87th. Paris ranked 29th and Dublin 41st.
The index includes 226 locations worldwide. Measure the comparative cost of more than 200 items in each location, including transportation, food, clothing, household items and entertainment. Abuja, Nigeria, ranked the least expensive in the survey, at number 226.
