Nature|A report had been made about the wind farm, according to which the power plant is being built too close to the golden eagle’s nest.
The summary is made by artificial intelligence and checked by a human.
A golden eagle died after crashing into a wind farm.
The eagle was found dead in Metsälammi’s canvas wind farm.
The Kainuu district of the Finnish Nature Conservation Union has appealed to the court about the new wind power formula.
Golden eagle was found dead in the Metsälammi canvas wind farm, in the southwestern part of Oulujärvi.
The eagle, which had already survived to the age of 19, was ringed as a youngster, and with this the bird could be identified. This is the first time in Finland that a bald eagle has been proven dead after hitting a wind farm.
“The bird was found torn to shreds under the dust,” says the chairman of the Kainuu district of the Finnish Nature Conservation Association Vesa Hyyryläinen.
The dead golden eagle was found on the 19th of March, but Hyyryläinen was informed about what happened only last week.
An emergency call to Kainuu, that’s how Hyyryläinen describes the incident. He sees that the volume of wind turbines built in the area is too large.
“I am a biologist and ecologist myself, so I understand the green transition very well. And how necessary it is globally, for example, in terms of the carbon balance and climate change.”
The situation is still untenable for him:
“In addition to the plight of people, we are concerned about the diversity of nature. Now it seems that there was finally a case where the risks materialized.”
Dead the golden eagle was an important part of its territory. The individual had survived for almost 20 years. Hyyrylä describes the eagle as a “top individual”, thanks to which the population has survived.
“The golden eagle in question has good breeding potential and is able to avoid dangers. Genetically, the instinct goes to the chicks, so losing such an individual is a really significant thing, not only for the eagle species in question, but also for the diversity of nature,” explains Hyyrylä.
In previous years, the territory of the now deceased Kotka has been important for the bald eagle population. Hyyrylä has been ringing chicks in the area for over 10 years, and almost every year two chicks have been found in the area. Usually, it is not guaranteed that golden eagles will nest every year. In the years when the golden eagle nests, the usual number of chicks is one.
“And now it’s about such a critical, endangered, very small bird of prey…” Hyyrylä adds.
For bald eagles the case is the first, but this method of death is sadly familiar to the slightly more abundant sea eagle. In Finland, more than 50 sea eagles have already been recorded as having died after crashing into a wind turbine.
“Something should really be done now. Now we are moving with too much volume here in the Kainuu area”.
Finnish Nature Conservation Union The district of Kainuu has complained about the province’s updated wind power formula to the Administrative Court of Northern Finland.
Hyyryläinen himself has been involved in making a report, which concluded that the wind turbine under construction is too close to the golden eagle’s nest.
“Now that risk has materialized. There is quite an emergency here, and I myself feel quite a big responsibility, having been involved in the investigations in many ways”, sums up Hyyryläinen.
“I myself am extremely shocked by this”.
