Taking a car into unknown and extreme territories to test its capabilities in the face ofvery high or very cold temperatures it is a practice common to many brands, including Skoda, which however could now change course and head straight for the road home, and precisely towards the headquarters in Mladá Boleslav. In fact, it is here that the Bohemian company has inaugurated a brand new Simulation Center in which to recreate a wide range of climatic conditions thus allowing complete tests.
Skoda Simulation Center, a 22 million euro investment
The result of an investment of almost 22 million euros and under the responsibility of the Technical Development department – let the parent company know – the new Simulation Center hosts a unique laboratory both in the Czech Republic and within the Volkswagen Group and is among the most modern structures of its kind in Europe. “The inauguration of the new Simulation Center represents a significant step forward in automotive development and reaffirms Škoda Auto’s leadership position in the testing of traction and thermal management systems,” he explains Johannes Neft, Board Member for Technical Development. “The importance of the new Simulation Center and the Emissions Center will continue to grow, both in terms of quality assurance of our vehicles and in the high efficiency of future powertrains and traction systems.”
Skoda Simulation Center, above 5500 meters altitude…
The new simulation center allows you to test the functionality of the vehicle under extreme load conditions and validate virtual calculations, under different driving conditions and providing a high degree of test variability in various climatic environments, being able recreate temperatures from -7 to +50 °C. Furthermore, the structure is capable of simulation conditions ranging from 10% to 95% relative humidity (critical for regions like India), exposure to sunlight and mountain driving at altitudes up to 5500 meters above sea level. The laboratory also has a modern roller dynamometer for vehicles with power up to 300 kW, capable of simulating driving resistances equal to speeds of 265 km/h. Not only that: it is also equipped with a sophisticated air ducting, an emissions analysis system and a high-capacity charging station for electric vehicles, with power up to 400 kW. The ability to combine these technologies allows you to perform complex tests that faithfully replicate real-world operations with high accuracy and precision in the results, with the added value of data analysis and evaluation directly conducted on site. By being able to carry out up to 850 tests per year, the Simulation Center significantly expands the possibilities for developing new technical solutions at Škoda Auto.
