Emmanuel Macron meets Xi Jinping in Beijing
Tariffs, China focuses on political uncertainty in France and Germany and hits Macron and Scholz
The European Union decided to impose heavy duties on Chinese electric cars which could in some cases reach up to 48%. The answer of Beijingapparently, was moderated, the Chinese authorities only talked about “wrong direction” and a “protectionism that stifles competition“. But in reality Xi Jinping is preparing for the offensive. Informally – according to what appears to Il Corriere della Sera – the Beijing government has drawn up a list of European products on which he prepares the retaliation. And behind the commercial choices there are those policiesbecause the two most targeted countries are France and Germany.
It is on them that Xi Jinping, the Chinese leader, wants to do increase the pressure for Brussels to change its ways. Among the products indicated for possible measures, the Chinese – continues Il Corriere – have included wines, cheeses and other dairy products: goods that the People’s Republic imports from France (Italian penetration is still very weak). In the list of retaliation threatened are then found i industrial products which most directly damage the Germanyespecially the car. The fall on the European housing markets yesterday is therefore mainly explained by the fact that the investors they already have intuition where the countermeasures will hit.
