Pope Francis received trade unionists from Argentina this Wednesday (12), the day the country’s Senate discussed the Basic Law, a project by President Javier Milei to reduce the size of the State and deregulate the Argentine economy.
The images were posted on X by the Argentine Airline Association (AAA), which opposes the privatization of Aerolíneas Argentinas, one of the original items of the project. The photos show union members holding banners from the state-owned company and AAA.
“At the same time that the vote on the Basic Law is being held in the Senate, Juan Pablo Brey, our general secretary, together with Verónica Espósito, deputy secretary, and Horácio Calculli, security secretary, meet with the pope at the Vatican City, where we were able to show our concern regarding the difficult economic situation that the country and the aeronautical industry are experiencing,” the union wrote on the social network.
“They expressed the importance of the role of Aerolíneas Argentinas and its preservation, stating that ‘it does not only represent a symbol of national pride, but plays a crucial role in the connectivity and economic development of the country’”, he added. The Vatican has not yet commented on the matter.
According to the Clarín newspaper, in the morning, libertarian senator Bartolomé Abdala announced that the Milei government accepted changes to approve the Basic Law, including removing the privatizations of Aerolíneas Argentinas, Correo Argentino and state media outlets from the project.
