According to what was reported by the Office of the Mayor of New York City, Last Tuesday, June 11, it took place the meeting of the Council’s Immigration Committee and Small Business Committee in New York City, in which they spoke jointly about the city efforts to prepare and assist asylum seekers and newly arrived migrants entering the workforce.
One of government organizations that have managed to connect migrant workers with companies who need them is The American Dream Worksan initiative where the asylum seeker interested in working must follow a few steps to register and thus begin to find opportunities in a professional center.
Registration is very simple, you just have to:
- Go to www.nyc.gov/site/sbs/careers/american-dream-works.page.
- Obtain your Employment Authorization Card (EAD) within the redirection link provided on the site.
- Complete your NYC Workforce1 online information form.
- Visit the Workforce1 career centers in New York City: Bronx, Downtown Brooklyn, Washington Heights, Queens (Jamaica) and Staten Island.

If you are an asylum seeker who has just arrived in New York City, You can get free, confidential help at the Asylum Seeker Resource Navigation Center. You will only need to schedule an appointment through staff at the New York City shelter or a partner office in the community. The Center will connect you with services and resources, including but not limited to:
- Medical insurance enrollment.
- Healthcare and appointment services.
- Mental health counseling.
- School registration.
- Children’s services.
- Immigration legal services.
- IDNYC Registration (Municipal Identification).
The Center can also connect you with providers and community organizations in the five boroughs of New York City, including Humanitarian Emergency Relief and Response Centers (HERRC).
