Your meta description: Yusaku Maezawa cancels DearMoon mission on SpaceX due to launch uncertainty. The project, launched in 2018, has been postponed indefinitely.
Yusaku Maezawa, a famous Japanese billionaire, canceled the long-awaited DearMoon mission, which involved a trip around the moon on a SpaceX vehicle. This ambitious project was first launched in 2018, and Maezawa had even purchased seats for eight fellow travelers in 2022.
The billionaire announced his decision on X (formerly Twitter), explaining that the uncertainty regarding the launch date of SpaceX’s Starship forced him to make this difficult choice. “I cannot plan for the future in a situation of uncertainty,” he said, apologizing to the crew members who waited a long time.
SpaceX has launched several tests of Starship, but with limited success. The first uncrewed test flight took place in April 2023 but did not reach space. A second test in November 2023 reached a greater height but also failed. Only in March of this year did the Starship reach space, but did not hit the expected splashdown points.
SpaceX is now preparing the fourth Starship test flight for June 5, part of the effort to develop a vehicle capable of carrying astronauts to the moon for NASA’s Artemis mission by 2026.
