Romania, Prime Minister Ciolacu watches F1 an hour before the European exit polls
June 9th was an important day across the Old Continent: most EU countries voted for their representatives for the European Parliament. But, for sports and motorsport enthusiasts, it was also the day of the Canadian Grand Prix, scheduled at a time close to the publication of the first exit polls.
Among these enthusiasts there is evidently also the Prime Minister of Romania Marcel Ciolacu, who was pinched by Antena 3 CNN colleagues on the phone during a live broadcast. With the exit polls less than an hour away, Romanian TV journalists believed Ciolacu was coordinating with his comrades from the centre-left Social Democratic Party. Instead he was watching the start of the Montreal Grand Prix, as he candidly admitted.
“Prime Minister, your phone is on, are you on Antena 3 CNN?“, the journalist asks him.
“No, I’m watching Formula 1, in Canada“.
“But there’s only an hour left until the vote“.
“We await the results here. Much, half of the race is the start“.
The elections in Romania then rewarded the government formation, made up of the alliance between the Social Democrats themselves and the centre-right liberals.
