Since this Monday, six men and three women have been trying a woman accused of killing her partner with laxatives. The man died in April 2021 after suffering multiple organ failure and dehydration after several weeks with chronic diarrhea. Salvador V. was admitted to a hospital in Valencia for several months. During this time, the woman, Mari Carmen B., continued to administer the laxatives, according to the accusations. As the prosecutor reported in the first session of the trial, the products used are very difficult to detect because the human body absorbs and evacuates them very quickly.
The Prosecutor’s Office is asking for 28 years in prison for the crimes of murder, fraud and forgery since during the time in which the victim was admitted, the woman withdrew money up to 152 times with her partner’s credit cards and requested two credits from his name for a global amount of more than 135,000 euros.
The accused, according to her defense, suffered “economic and emotional ruin” with the death of her partner. As she has described throughout her statement, the relationship between the two began in 2019, when she was 49 and he was 68 years old. In March 2020 they began to live together, with her young daughters, while his daughter lived, with her son, in a small house next to the chalet the couple occupied, in the La Cañada urbanization, in Paterna (Valencia). . Mari Carmen, as she explained, never lacked anything: “Not me, not my daughters,” she said. “Now she is no longer here and I have not derived any benefit from her death,” she added.
During Salvador’s stay in the hospital, Mari Carmen acquired more than 2,000 pills of different laxatives. “I bought them for myself,” she assured the jury before her defense lawyer treated her as an addict and she explained that she has been taking them since she was 17 and that she increases her intake when she is nervous, such as during Salvador’s hospital stay. . She has assured that they have stopped taking effect and has acknowledged that, on one occasion, in a pharmacy they warned her that her high consumption was dangerous and made her sign a paper assuming that she took them at her own risk. .
As for the money, the accused has admitted having taken it out but always with the consent of her partner and in order to “continue paying the household staff and necessary purchases.” Additionally, she has stated that Salvador reviewed all of her banking transactions from her cell phone on a daily basis.
The victim was a delicate man. She had a recognized permanent disability, suffered from diabetes and had suffered cerebral infarctions but led “a peaceful life with optimal quality,” according to the prosecutor, who has explained how the accused, on the contrary, “had no paid work or income of her own.”

The first time he was admitted was in September on September 14, 2020 and he spent four days in the intensive care unit. He was not discharged until three weeks later, on October 4. “Mari Carmen continued to provide laxatives to Salvador and he again suffered from acute diarrhea that caused a serious deterioration in his state of health, and he was admitted again to the aforementioned hospital on October 6, 2020, according to the accusations. The victim developed chronic functional diarrhea refractory to any treatment and dehydration and progressive deterioration until he died on April 16, 2021 due to severe septic shock caused by “the secondary complications of the diarrheal condition that he presented caused by the accused by the administrations.” continued use of laxatives,” the accusations add.
Mari Carmen’s defense maintains that at no time did anyone catch her giving her partner laxatives and that no one accused her of it: “They didn’t accuse me or see me because I didn’t do it,” she told the jury this Monday.
Salvador’s condition was such that doctors considered the possibility that he was suffering from poisoning and ran tests to detect mercury and arsenic in his blood, hair or nails. All tests were negative.
The private accusations that represent the children of the deceased hold the woman responsible for “familiarly and socially isolating” her partner and that she took advantage of this moment and the situation of “lack of protection to supply him with laxatives that ended his life and emptied his accounts.” . “She is an absolute predator,” they have maintained.
During the interrogation by her defense, the only one that Mari Carmen wanted to submit to, said that her partner had alcoholism problems, for which he went to therapy, smoked more than two packs a day, did not eat a correct diet and did not attend to his continuous requests from doctors that he drink water. The defense theory is that the infection that caused a tract caused the death.
