Nokia said today, Monday, that CEO Pekka Lundmark made a phone call using new technologies called “immersive audio and video technology,” which improves the quality of communication by creating 3D audio, making interactions closer to live interactions.
“We demonstrated the future of voice communications,” Lundmark said. Lundmark was also present when the first 2G connection was made in 1991.
Current communications in smartphones are unidirectional, that is, they compress the audio factors together, so the audible sound is weaker in texture and less in detail, but the new technology will add three-dimensional sound, which will enable the caller to hear everything as if he were sitting with the other party in the call.
“This is the biggest leap forward in the live voice calling experience since the introduction of the one-way telephony used in today’s smartphones and computers,” said Jenny Lokander, president of Nokia Technologies.
She added during an interview, “Work is currently underway to make this method the standard method… so that network service providers, chip manufacturers, and headphone manufacturers can start implementing it in their products.”
Nokia made the call using a regular smartphone on a public 5G network.
