Projections for the European Parliament election show major advances by right-wing parties this Sunday (9). In France, Marine Le Pen’s National Rally party won 31.5% of the vote and President Emmanuel Macron unexpectedly called early parliamentary elections.
Macron said the rise of “nationalists” would be dangerous for France and Europe. He announced that the new vote will be in two rounds, on June 30th and July 7th.
“The far-right parties, which in recent years have opposed many advances achieved by Europe, such as the economic relaunch, the common protection of our borders, the support for our farmers and the support for Ukraine, are making progress across the continent “, said Macron, who added, according to the EFE agency:
“For me, who has always considered that a strong, united and independent Europe is good for France, it is a situation that I cannot be satisfied with, of demagogues. It is a danger for our nation, but also for our Europe and for France’s place in Europe and the world”.
The European Union is holding elections to renew the 720 seats in its Parliament. Each country holds local elections, where citizens vote for national parties. Once elected, these parliamentarians join one of the seven transnational parties in the European Union.
European elections take place every five years and are in their tenth edition. Among the 27 countries in the bloc, approximately 360 million voters are eligible to vote.
The first projections based on research indicate that the right has also advanced in Germany and Austria.
Marine Le Pen celebrated Macron’s decision to call legislative elections in France. “This historic vote shows that when people vote, they win,” she said. “We are ready to take power if France trusts us in national elections,” she said.
A poll carried out this Sunday night by the European Parliament, according to Reuters, shows a clear shift to the right, with a projected victory for the center-right European People’s Party and the groups they call the extreme right.
The European People’s Party is the largest in the European Parliament, dominated by German Christian Democrats, with a good number of Poles and Romanians.
