Left-wing and green parties made gains in the Nordic countries in the European Parliament elections on Sunday, while far-right parties declined, according to official results and opinion polls.
In Finland, the Left Alliance party achieved progress by winning 17.3% of the votes, four points more than in 2019, according to the results announced after counting 99% of the ballot papers.
“I never dreamed of such numbers,” said Lee Anderson, leader of the Left Alliance.
Thus, the party will obtain three seats out of the 15 allocated to Finland in the European Parliament, compared to only one seat during the previous elections.
The center-right National Coalition, led by Prime Minister Petri Orbo, also consolidated its gains by winning about 25% of the votes, an increase of approximately four points.
The popularity of the far-right Finns Party, which is participating in the government coalition, declined, with it obtaining 7.6% of the votes, a decrease of 6.2%, and it will only get one seat.
“This is a wake-up call for our party,” Sebastian Tinkinen, who won the party’s sole seat, told public broadcaster YLE.
In Sweden, the Green Party made progress by obtaining 15.7% of the votes, an increase of 4.2 points, according to a poll of voters’ opinions upon leaving the polls conducted by the SVT television channel.
The Left Party also advanced (+4 points to 10.7%), while the extreme right, represented by the Sweden Democrats, declined by 1.4 points to 13.9%.
The Social Democrats maintained their position in the lead with 23.1%.
In Denmark, the Socialist People’s Party took the lead and achieved remarkable progress by obtaining 18.4% of the votes, an increase of 5.2% compared to 2019, according to a poll of voters’ opinions when they left the polls conducted by public television “DR”.
The Social Democratic Party, which leads the government coalition, fell to 15.4%. Both parties are expected to win three of the 15 seats in Denmark.
