Editorial|The war of aggression in Ukraine now seems to be going well for Russia, but the Russian leadership’s fear of the future can be seen in the pursuit of flower-layers.
VRussian opposition politician Aleksei Navalnyi, who died in grief at the beginning of the year, would have turned 48 last Tuesday.
The Russian administration, which is officially silent on Navalny, seemed to take the day seriously. Police officers guarded the statues erected in memory of the victims of the persecutions in different parts of the country, so that no one could lay flowers on them. Navalny’s grave was targeted by a special guard in Moscow.
The police arrested a few brave people who arrived at memorials or graves with flowers. In Moscow, the police also rushed to small events where people watched the Navalny memorial concert organized in Berlin on Tuesday. Many musicians from Russia performed at the concert.
Police states operate with the logic of a police state. Isolating monuments from the authorities may seem like a show of force. To outsiders, however, the pursuit of women carrying flowers gives an image of fear and insecurity, which is reinforced by the news of Russian leader Vladimir Putin’s even tighter security measures.
One should not succumb to excessive belittling of Russia. Russia has got its military economy rolling, which is helping its forces in the war of conquest in Ukraine. The war economy has also improved the wages of many people in Russia, which has increased satisfaction. The rest of the marginalized opposition has been silenced, the opponents of the war are a silent minority. Sanctions can be circumvented. The West, on the other hand, seems to be tripping over its own shoelaces.
But it is also good to note the concern that regularly surfaces from under the threat of the Russian leadership. Russia has huge structural problems, and the economy boosted by war doping is not as strong as the numbers now show. That’s why even a few flower-counters are being chased hysterically.
As long as the West works effectively, it does not have to fear Russia. The time for this action is now.
