During the Summer Game Fest 2024 the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions of Valorant, the free-to-play shooter from Riot Games. The studio has thought long and hard about how to create ad hoc conversions for consoles that reflect the competitive spirit of the title. For this reason the developers ultimately decided not to support the aim with the DualSense gyroscopeas It would “heavily favor” PS5 players compared to those Xbox Series X|S.
For those who don’t know, the DualSense has a gyroscope sensor, which in some games allows you to adjust your aim by tilting the controller in various directions. To be honest, not many players (and games) use this feature in combination with the thumbsticks, although (with a lot of practice) it offers greater precision.
No gyroscope aiming and PC crossplay
Precisely for this reason this function will not be supported for the PS5 version of Valorant, as the Xbox Series X|S controller does not have an internal gyroscope, as explained by product management lead Coleman Palm.
“There is no gyroscope support for the console, no,” he replied. “It’s an interesting technology, though, and I also want to tinker with it more,” Palm said on we would heavily favor PS5 over Xboxwhich we don’t want to do.”
“We are not opposed to fully supporting it,” he added. “We just wanted to focus innovations on more standard control paradigms to support players on both platforms. There are people inside who are very excited about gyroscope and have been for a while.”
For similar reasons, Valorant will not support crossplay between console and PC, due to differences in accuracy between mouse and keyboard combinations versus controllers and aim assist. Returning to the topic, on console Valorant implements an exclusive feature, called Concentration, a shooting mode that is activated when you shoot without using the viewfinder and which offers less marked sensitivity.
