A 39-year-old man was imprisoned and charged with committing a violent attack against an official, today, Saturday, after he physically assaulted Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, which led her to cancel a number of her activities.
The Prime Minister suffers a “minor injury” and underwent a medical examination at a hospital, her office said in a statement on Saturday.
Frederiksen, 46, was not injured but was “shocked” by the incident.
The man appeared in court today, Saturday, after he was arrested yesterday evening, Friday, immediately after the attack occurred.
The Danish Ritzau news agency reported that the accused, a Polish man who had a translator at his side, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
Over the past days, Frederiksen has been participating in activities in support of Christel Schaldmus, the Social Democrats’ candidate for the European Parliament. But Schaldmus told the Ritzau news agency that the attack was not related to election campaign activities.
Broyles Lund Poulsen, Danish Defense Minister, described the attack as a “shock.” “This is not Denmark,” he wrote on the X website. “We are not attacking our prime minister.”
The incident comes as millions of Europeans head to polling stations to cast their votes in the European Parliament elections. In a post on the X website, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen condemned the attack on Frederiksen, describing it as “a despicable act that goes against everything we believe in and fight for in Europe.”
