The next President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, revealed this Friday that she cried when she read the message that President Andrés Manuel López Obrador sent her to congratulate her on her victory in the June 2 elections.
“I confess that when the President sent me this message on Wednesday night, my eyes filled with tears from the emotion of receiving recognition from a man whom I have always admired as a great leader and as a great president.” , wrote the former head of Government of Mexico City.
“In my life I have chanted multiple times ‘it is an honor to be with Obrador’. We belong to a social movement and a project that has transformed the lives of millions of Mexican men and women, as well as the public life of our country. For this reason I cannot, nor will I fail them.”.
In the morning, President López Obrador confirmed that he will meet with Claudia Sheinbaum next Monday, June 10, after receiving the certificate of majority from the Electoral Tribunal of the Judicial Branch of the Federation (TEPJF).
“It is going to be a meeting, we are going to talk and, surely, she is going to inform you. But it is a meeting, a meeting to talk, to agree on the transition. And she would inform them,” said the president in his morning press conference at the National Palace.
The Chief Executive stressed that Claudia Sheinbaum “is first class” and will continue the second stage of transformation of public life in Mexico.
“I am very happy that now, even those who do not see us favorably, are accepting and respecting her; how good, how good, because that unity is important. (…) I am very happy that everyone is contributing, helping,” said the man from Tabasco.
López Obrador also showed the message he sent last Wednesday, May 29, to the virtual president-elect when she was still a candidate for the Let’s Keep Making History coalition and carried out his campaign closing in the Zócalo of Mexico City before thousands of women and men who support the nation project:
“Although I think the same as you that power is humility, the truth is, I am very proud. You are the best thing that has happened to the country in these times. There is no doubt that Mexico and its people are blessed,” he highlights. AMLO’s message to Sheinbaum.
“This came from my heart that day. Everything comes from my heart, although politics is head, heart and character, and it is reason and passion,” said the president.
Claudia Sheinbaum outlines greater international opening
The future president of Mexico has dedicated her first week after her electoral victory to engaging in conversations with international leaders of various ideological currents, marking a significant contrast with the administration of López Obrador, known for its more isolationist approach to foreign policy.
Sheinbaum, who will receive her certification as president-elect this Sunday, has spoken with global leaders such as the president of the United States, Joe Biden, and the president of the Government of Spain, Pedro Sánchez.
In addition, he has established contacts with key figures in global financial institutions, such as Kristalina Georgieva, director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), and Ajay Banga, president of the World Bank (WB).
In a sign of his intention to expand Mexico’s diplomatic reach, Sheinbaum has also spoken with the president of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele, and has received congratulations from leaders of countries such as China, Russia and Ukraine, as well as member nations of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America (ALBA).
